3 Steps to Assess Your IT Project Needs

    By admin | Blog, Build Your Team | Comments are Closed | 1 August, 2019 | 0

You have a big project headed your way. Right now, it’s still in the initial stages, but when it comes to project readiness, there’s no such thing as being too prepared.

IT plays a huge role in modern business operations, so it’s safe to assume you’ll be needing resources of this nature. Since the caliber of your project team can make or break its success, it’s time to start the planning process.

    Define the Project Scope

You can’t determine your IT needs until you’ve built a concrete foundation for the project. The project scope — i.e., goals, costs, deliverables, tasks, and deadlines — is your starting point, because you won’t know who to hire until you know exactly what you’re doing.

Before you start planning your IT needs, make sure the main elements of the project scope are essentially set in stone, as changes can affect the resources you’ll need. For example, if the initial deadline moves up by a month, you might need to hire more talent than originally proposed, which will also affect your budget.

    Gauge Current Resources

Chances are, at least some of the IT talent you’ll need is already on staff. Inventory their skill sets to identify any gaps, so you know what abilities to look for in new hires. You’ll also need to check the bandwidth of current employees, to make sure they have the time needed to dedicate to the project.

    Determine Additional Staffing Needs

After evaluating your current IT staff, you’ll know exactly what you’re working with. In addition to hiring for the skills your team is lacking, you’ll also need to decide the employment type of the positions you’re seeking to fill. For example, if you only need a more hands-on-deck or a certain skill set for this project, it makes sense to hire contract employees. However, if your business is growing and you need this type of talent for the foreseeable future, it might be a better move to make the positions full-time.
