Right now, you have a really great job, but there’s just one problem — it’s a temporary position. If it was offered on a permanent basis, you’d accept it in a heartbeat, but so far, that hasn’t happened.
You know you need to make an outstanding impression, but you’re not quite sure how to go about it. Here’s some advice to help you make all the right moves.
No doubt, your boss will be pleased if you do your job as directed. However, that alone probably won’t convince them you’re indispensable. Really drive your value home by going the extra mile. Try to complete assignments ahead of schedule — without sacrificing quality — and volunteer to take on additional responsibilities.
Follow the Rules
If you constantly cause your boss headaches, there’s no way you’ll be asked to stay on permanently. Be easy to manage by showing up to work on time, adhering to the dress code, and obeying all other company policies. Do note, some rules may be instituted on an unwritten basis — i.e., not taking personal phone calls at your desk — so pay close attention to company norms and mimic them.
Bond With the Team
Your colleagues can be your greatest ally, so make a point to build relationships with them. If they like you, they’ll advocate for you to become a permanent member of the team. Get to know these people by being friendly and engaging them in conversation throughout the workday. Take it a step further by accepting and extending invitations to socialize outside the office — i.e., lunch and happy hour.
Consult Your Recruiter
Let your recruiter know you’re really happy in the job and hope to make the situation permanent. They likely have a relationship with the hiring manager, so they can talk to them and find out if this is possible and what you would need to do to make it happen. Always keep your recruiter in the loop, because they’re your biggest supporter.
